First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Course
- Learn to teach the newest American Red Cross first aid, CPR, and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses!
- This program features a modular design to allow customization, has been revised to meet the latest CPR guidelines, and is designed to meet the specific needs of workplaces, including OSHA requirements.
- Instructors will be able to teach up to 24 newly revised courses including various combinations of first aid, use of AED's, and adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as six optional 1-hour injury-control modules: "Ergonomics," "Slips, Trips, and Falls," "Back Injury Prevention," "Workplace Violence Awareness," "Managing Stress," and "Your Heart Matters."
- Instructor course includes precourse testing of first aid and CPR skills and knowledge, practice teaching, and written tests. Also includes technical background on defibrillation, instruction, practice, and testing in use of AEDs.

Prerequisites:Candidates must demonstrate mastery of adult, infant & child CPR, and first aid skills. Teaching experience a plus.
Dates:Classes are scheduled throughout the year. Please call the office for the schedule. Attendance at skills tests all class sessions is required. Special circumstances may be discussed with instructor trainers. The course will begin with a skills test and written examination.
Application Information:Individuals interested in the instructor course must contact the Chapter to receive an application. Cost of training is $140.00 and includes instructor and participant books. Scholarships are available for candidates who volunteer to teach chapter-sponsored community courses. |

Adult CPR/AED

Learn how to save a life with adult CPR and automated external defibrillation.

Infant and Child CPR
Program Support Cost : $52
This class specifically focuses on the life-threathing situations regarding infants and toddlers(age 0 - 7). In this valuable 5 1/2 hour class, parents, teachers and child care takers will learn what to do when infants & children are :
- Choking on food, toys, and other hazards.
- Having difficulty breathing/Unconsciousness.
Participants will be provided take-home information on injury prevention and will learn how to:
- Recognize and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies
- Use the EMS system effectively
=>Infant and Child CPR(5 1/2 hours) : Applies to infants and children up to 8 years.
=>Infant CPR(3 1/2 hours) : Applies to infants up to 12 months.
=>Child CPR(4 hours) : Applies to children age 1 to 8 years.
Adult CPR/AED plus Infant and Child CPR

First Aid

You will practice bandaging and splinting and learn a plan of action to recognize and care for:
- Unconsciousness
- Bleeding
- Broken bones, sprains, and strains
- Sudden illness
Standard First Aid with AED
This course is only offered as a contract course in the workplace, not as a community course.
Learn these skills for caring for adult victims:
- Rescue breathing
- CPR
- First aid for choking
- Controlling bleeding
- Caring for burns
- Splinting
- Caring for injuries to muscles, bones, and joints
- Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease
- Recognizing signals of a heart attack
- Caring for stroke, seizure diabetic emergencies, poisoning, and allergic reaction.
Focusing on common causes of worksite injuries and key health risks, these one-hour awareness-level modules highlight risks and promote prevention. Self-assessments help employees recognize risky habits. Demonstrations and lively discussions reinforce practical prevention tips. Modules include: Ergonomics; Slips, Trips and Falls; Back Injury Prevention; Workplace Violence Awareness; Managing Stress; and Your Heart Matters.
For Professional Rescuers
Emergency Response First Responder Course
Anyone with a duty to act in an emergency should consider the benefits of first responder training: fire fighters, wilderness trip leaders, ski patrollers, industrial emergency responders, athletic trainers, and others. Scenario-based skill practice is combined with lecture, discussion, and other activities to teach current information and skills essential for providing emergency care until more advanced medical personnel arrive. American Red Cross Emergency Response is consistent with the latest US Department of Transportation guidelines for training first responders. Successful completion of this course meets POST (law enforcement) First Responder requirement.
Skills taught include:
- Rescue breathing
- First aid for choking
- Single and two-rescuer CPR
- Use of a resuscitation mask
- Use of a bag-valve mask (BVM) resuscitator
- Care for bleeding, shock, specific injuries, medical emergencies, and childbirth
- Care for spinal injuries, including backboarding
- Automated external defibrillation
- Hands-on practice with suction equipment, oral and nasal airways, and supplemental oxygen
- Human body systems, preventing disease transmission, and crisis intervention.
Preventing Disease Transmission
Designed to assist in meeting the requirements of the OSHA Standard on Bloodborne Pathogens, this course is valuable to anyone who would like to learn more about bloodborne diseases and infection control:
- Information on the hepatitis B vaccine
- Body substance isolation (BSI) and universal precautions
- Personal protective equipment
- Work practice and engineering controls
- Reporting exposure incidents
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
Designed for any individual who has a duty to respond to emergencies, this 8 hour course combines lectures and video with hands-on training.
- Recognizing and responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants
- Two-rescuer CPR
- Use of body substance isolation precautions to prevent disease transmission
- Use of resuscitation and bag-valve masks
- Use of an AED for a victim of sudden cardiac arrest
CPR for the Professional Rescuer Review
Learn the skills needed for professional rescuers to respond appropriately to respiratory and cardiac emergencies.
- The role of the professional rescuer in the emergency medical services (EMS) system.
- The role of the professional rescuer in providing emergency care.
- How to recognize and respond to respiratory and cardiac emergencies in infants, children, and adults.
- Recognize the risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease.
- Perform specialized skills and techniques used by professional rescuers, including two-person CPR and bag-valve mask skills.
AED Essentials
Provides intensive, hands-on training in automated external defibrillation (AED). This two-hour course meets requirements for professional-level AED training as indicated by the Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Babysitter's Training
What you need to know and what every parent wants in a responsible babysitter! Designed for 11- to 15-year olds, the Babysitter's Training Course can help you:
- Interview for a babysitting job
- Choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games
- Perform first aid
- Learn diapering and feeding techniques
- Handle bedtime issues
- Market yourself safely
These classes are taught as part of
after school programs at area middle schools. For schedules, please
contact your local school department.
Basic Aid Training (B.A.T.)
For 8-12 year-olds, this course introduces youth to the emergency action steps of check, call, and care and to first aid procedures. An activity book with puzzles and games teaches children how to prevent injuries and what to do in an emergency.
This course requires a minimum of eight participants.
First Aid for Children Today (F.A.C.T.)
The F.A.C.T. Critter Clan Family of multicultural animal characters leads children on a path of discovery. Children ages 5-8 learn about ways to be aware of dangers, how to prevent them, and how to respond to them if necessary.
Starter Facts:Introduction to HIV/AIDS
For anyone who wants to learn about HIV/AIDS, this course develops a factual knowledge base on:
- Components of the immune system
- Conditions necessary for infections to occur
- The difference between HIV, HIV infection, and AIDS
- Recognizing whether information about HIV/AIDS is accurate
- Identifying resources for additional information
HIV/AIDS Facts Practice
Available to anyone, but geared toward people who need to answer questions about HIV/AIDS in non-judgmental ways (e.g., HIV testing site workers, chemical dependency counselors, and HIV/STI clinicians), the Facts Practice session teaches participants to use the facts about HIV/AIDS to respond in a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive manner.
Prerequisite: Starter Facts
Learn how to facilitate HIV/AIDS educational sessions as an American Red Cross Basic HIV/AIDS Fundamentals Instructor. Teach people the facts about HIV/AIDS and how they can apply the facts to their own behavior.
Prerequisites:Must be at least 17 years old and be certified in Starter Facts and Facts Practice.
Basic HIV/AIDS Program: Prevention Skills Instructor Course
HIV/AIDS Instructors learn to facilitate skill-building activities in a factually accurate, nonjudgmental and culturally-sensitive manner.
- Adapting prevention behaviors
- Hands-on educational activities
- HIV prevention issues
Prerequisites:Must be at least 17 years old and hold current certification in Basic HIV/AIDS Fundamentals.
Hispanic HIV/AIDS Fundamentals Instructor Course
This course prepares bilingual individuals to share information and teach the skills needed to reduce HIV infection rates within the Hispanic community. Participants receive an extensive reference manual. Materials are available in Spanish and English.
Prerequisites:Must be at least 17 years old and be certified in Starter Facts and Facts Practice.
The American Red Cross is the leading provider of aquatics programs nationwide. From swim lessons to lifeguard training, the Red Cross helps community residents to enjoy water sports and activities safely.
These classes are taught by local authorized providers.
CPR for the Professional Rescuer- a 9 hour course that teaches a variety of skills including one- and two-rescuer CPR, use of resuscitation masks and bag-valve masks for ventilating victims, and how to respond in special rescue situations such as drowning.
Community Water Safety- Stay safe in pools and other water environments including waterparks, lakes, rivers, and oceans. Learn about hazards to watch for, how to prevent drowning and injury, and how to rescue yourself and others if a problem does arise.
GuardStart- American Red Cross GuardStart is designed to prepare 11- to 14-year olds to take American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification programs and for future work as lifeguards. The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills that they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership, and professionalism.
Infant and Parent Aquatics Program- If your child is between 6-months and 5-years old, this program can help develop swimming readiness by teaching children to have fun in the water. Through guided practice sessions, children learn skills such as water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration, and more.
Learn to Swim Levels I-VII- You'll find something for you in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program. There's instruction for all ages and abilities to help improve your swimming skills.
Lifeguard Training- Are you 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or a challenging career? American Red Cross Lifeguarding is the best place to start! Lifeguarding puts you in an exciting position, working as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. You could save a life!
Lifeguarding will help you develop skills and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. It's a great way to demonstrate what you can offer. Colleges and employers look for applicants who can deal effectively with people, who have a take charge attitude and who are willing to work to develop new skills.
American Red Cross Lifeguarding also offers these optional training modules to develop more skills:
- Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
- Bloodborne Pathogens (Preventing Disease Transmission)
- Oxygen Administration
- Waterfront Lifeguarding
- Waterpark Lifeguarding
Lifeguard Training Instructor- Train community residents in important lifesaving and aquatics safety skills. Instructors are also authorized to teach CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid and CPR for lay responders. Lifeguard Training Instructors are always in demand!
